“Don’t let it be forgot, that there once was a spot, for one brief shining moment, that was known as Camelot.”
The world can never forget – Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe’s award-winning masterpiece, Camelot, is an absolute royal delight. The intriguing story is based upon the legend of King Arthur, as adapted from the novel "The Once and Future King" by T.H. White. Through the years, Camelot has grown increasingly popular. A review published in 2003 summarizes it: “This musically rich, legend-based classic evokes enough swashbuckling spectacle to keep one smiling. And for lovers of dime-store romance, Camelot has it all – a beautiful English princess swept off her feet by a shy but passionate bachelor king; an ardent French knight torn between devotion to his liege and an uncontrollable hunger, reciprocated, to be sure, for the king’s tempestuous wife. Camelot features a score rich in English country-tune charm by Alan Jay Lerner. Its lyrics, by Frederick Loewe never fail to dazzle with their virtuosity and wit.”
Being the origin of some of the most popular Broadway songs, such as “Camelot”, “If Ever I Would Leave You” and ‘What Do The Simple Folk Do”, it is little surprise that Camelot received multiple awards, such as six Tony Awards, an Outer Critics Circle Award, a Theatre World Award, multiple Tony Award nominations, as well as a Grammy nomination.
Bishop Blanchet High School’s acclaimed drama department produces three productions a year, of which one is a spring musical – this year, it is Camelot’s turn. Their highly successful past productions include Broadway smashers such as Little Women, Some Enchanted Evening, Pride and Prejudice, Guys and Dolls, Shrek the Musical, and Mary Poppins, among others. With a focus on truth and courage and the goal of cultivating creativity, sensitivity, and enthusiasm in young people, every production is an embodiment of theatre magic at play.
Seattle’s oldest active theatre, the Moore Theatre, will be transformed into a medieval wonderland, where magic happens and knights in shiny armor rule the kingdom. The 1,800-seat landmark theatre has seen many legendary productions, of which probably the most noteworthy is the very first full-stage production of The Who’s rock opera, Tommy.
