Before discussing the podcast, let us gossip about its host, the lovely journalist and proud gossiper Kelsey McKinney. Kelsey is from Texas, and right after graduating from college, she immediately moved on to become a professional journalist. Through years of a career in journalism, she has become a seasoned reporter and writer. The free-spirited journalist has written many articles, from mundane to the most absurd. Apart from journalism, she also is an accomplished author. In 2022, She debuted her novel God Spare the Girls, a fictional tale of two sisters and a secret they uncovered about their father (you should read this).
In 2019, alongside other journalists, they established Defector Media. The media company focusing on sports blogging is employee-owned, meaning the staffers have complete control of the content they put on their website.
Part of their projects is the beloved Normal Gossip podcast. The podcast is the brainchild of Kelsey herself, serving as the host and writer. In this podcast, she reads stories submitted by listeners and discusses them in an old-fashioned gossipy manner. In its many seasons, the premise is an undeniable success. Dana Murphy, the journalist/ author/podcaster's literary agent, says Kelsey "tapped into a cultural nerve." There is no shaming in saying that gossip is a hostile but delightful part of the culture, and it can be a spark of accountability and, of course, entertainment.
