Las Cafeteras have taken over multiple theaters across the country, particularly with their "Hasta La Muerte" performance, which is a celebration for the Day of the Dead. The stage show combines traditional music in both English and Spanish with all sorts of colors and flowers. All of this helps generate a vibe around the entire night that you won't be able to find anywhere near Seattle during this time of year.
Even if this isn't a holiday that you celebrate on the regular, Las Cafeteras' "Hasta La Muerte" can engulf you in the culture behind the event. You're getting a little bit of everything with this performance. There are moments of poetry, some visual elements that are also going to be a part of the night, to guide the audience through the entire experience. Saying that an event is "one of a kind" is one of the most overused phrases; however, it fits "Hasta La Muerte" like a glove.
The Day of the Dead celebration that originated in Mexico has recently captivated audiences the world over, particularly through movies like Coco, and even a festival that was crafted for a James Bond movie. Now, this peculiar celebration that unites the world of the living and the world of the dead has a stage performance that allows people to dive into the psyche of this celebration. That might just be the key behind this cultural phenomenon. Very few civilizations have found ways to "celebrate" death in a way that honors those who've crossed over to the other side in a manner that's not spooky.
One of the things that has people on the fence about this show at times is the idea that it's 100% in Spanish. That's why the folks of Las Cafeteras have made it a point to craft a promo in English. Yes, there are likely going to be Spanish songs playing at certain points. There may even be Spanish poems read as part of the performance. However, this is a multilingual event that aims to bring a very sacred part of Mexican culture to a wider audience. The Seattle Theatre Group is always at the forefront of offering these types of cultural events, much to the delight of the fans.
Take this event as if you were headed to a play! What do we usually say about those? Broadway rules apply! That means that you want to be in the middle of the theater, quite a few rows removed from the stage. This is going to give you the chance to have a broader view of the show. These are also spots where you can truly take in the full stage design, which is one of the hidden gems of this performance by far.
Right now, you can find access to this performance for only $43. That's a steal for a show that you're going to remember for a long time!
